Client Case Study Lara Gwyn - When I Grow Up

Client Case Study Lara Gwyn - When I Grow Up Um, do you know that Ive coached hundreds of women since I started offering dream career guidance in 2008? And that these women are freakin rock stars, leaving soul-sucking jobs and traveling the world and launching creative, grown-up businesses and simply doing work that fits their lifestyle goals? Well ya do now and youll hear their stories firsthand in my  Client Case Studies series! Lara and I started working together in October 2014, and I loved seeing her start her nutrition biz, host retreats, and teach courses in the last year and change. Such amazeballs stuff! Why did you decide to work with a creative career coach? I decided to work with a career coach to form my ideas of what I wanted to do with my career and move out of my 9-5. I needed someone to help solidify ideas and hold me accountable. What were you doing work-wise when we started our sessions? I was working at an energy company 9-5 in marketing. What was your biggest takeaway from our work together? How great it is to have someones unbiased opinion who will hold you to a game plan and help push you forward.  You  inspire people to go after what really lights them up and then help them create a path to make it real. You got ideas out of my head  into a tangible form so I could  build forward momentum. You stood by my side  and was a cheerleader along the way to keep going and digging, even though  what I originally thought I wanted to do wasnt what I ended up pursuing.    You were  very much on my side and were great at holding me accountable to help reach goals while navigating the details of rolling out my dreams. You have a knack for listening and honing in on my passion. Was there anything else you tried to do as a career between the time we stopped our sessions and what you do for work now? If so, how did it inform your current career? No, I didnt try anything else. What would you tell someone now that was in your shoes when we first started working together? Whats your best tip to allow them to make a grown-up living doing what they love? Step out and take action with what you think you want to do. One action will build a path. Sometimes we must be in action to have a path appear. Dont overthink, just go do and see what pops up. Whats on the horizon for your business? Wed love to hear about any upcoming offerings or goals! Im partnering with a local yoga studio to teach a nutrition workshop in August and I plan to continue to plan more to keep me in action until I can figure out next steps into a career.  Im basically playing it by ear right now until I can come up with how I want to manifest what I really want to do. Aw, Lara is the best! If youre also looking to become a Woman of the World (which is my term for a full-time entrepreneur),  get  a sneak peak at my new monthly, live, video interview series and my first guest right here!

The #1 Secret To Excelling At Your First Job - Work It Daily

The #1 Secret To Excelling At Your First Job - Work It Daily There’s nothing that can quite explain the feeling of landing your first real job. After years of school and months of job searching, you can’t quite believe you're FINALLY at this point in your life. You’re excited, proud, and terrified all at once. And so begins the next chapter in your life - the full-time working part. So, what’s the secret to excelling at your first job? Related: 3 Steps To Create Your Own Career Development Plan If you want to start your career off on the right foot, you need to develop a system that keeps you motivated and accountable. Having this will lead to raises, promotions, and - most importantly - happiness. Here at CAREEREALISM, we’ve developed something called the Core, Reach, Passion system. It’s easy to follow and has worked amazingly for us so far. Here’s a breakdown of how it works: Core Consider all of the tasks in your job description as your Core responsibilities. These are the tasks, activities, and projects you were hired to do. Consider these your base responsibilities. If you do anything less than these things, you’re not doing your job. These are the first things you should focus on each day. You can’t skip these duties and just work on your Reach and Passion projects (you’ll learn more about these in a second). These babies always take priority. Reach Now, although you were hired for your Core responsibilities, limiting your job to those tasks isn’t going to get you a raise, and it DEFINITELY isn’t going to get you promoted. If you want to get more, you need to give more. That’s where your Reach projects come in. Your Reach projects build off of your Core responsibilities. For example, if you were hired to manage social media, a potential Reach project could be to research, propose, and implement a new social scheduling platform that saves you time and allows you to be more creative with your social campaigns. Taking on Reach projects is a great way to show your employer your increased value to the company - which justifies paying you more. Cha-ching! Passion Your Passion projects marry your personal interests with your skills to add value to the company (make it money). These are the projects that not only get you promotions, but also keep you happy and motivated at work. Similar to your Reach projects, your Passion projects should build off of your Core responsibilities. These projects are your chance to create exceptional value as well as pursue a personal interest. For example, when I was the Content Manager for CAREEREALISM, I spearheaded a content series called the “Happy Grad Project.” This series not only increased opt-ins for the site (value), but also showcased an area I’m passionate about (helping new grads kickstart their careers). You will likely have to discuss these projects with your manager before actively pursuing them. If they like your idea, they can help you focus your efforts to add as much value as possible. How will this system help you excel at your first job? By following the Core, Reach, Passion system, you will be able to monitor your own performance more effectively. It keeps you accountable. It shows you where you need to improve. It motivates you to exceed expectations. It builds fundamental understanding of how to achieve success. The best part? Having this fundamental understanding of how to achieve success will help you in other areas of your life, too (i.e. school). What are your Reach and Passion projects, and how will they add value to YOUR company? This post was originally published at an earlier date.
